Stroud Area Wind Orchestra is a community wind (or concert) band consisting of brass, woodwind and percussion players. We play a range of music from film, television and musicals through to contemporary arrangements for concert band.
We currently have a limited number of instruments which are available for hire to wishes to join the band, but do not own an instrument. We will always attempt to accommodate players, regardless of age or ability.
Our current Musical Director is David Smith. David is a well known local Conductor and Musical Director. He has been playing the trumpet since he was 8 years old and moved to being a professional player at the age of 18. He has spent long periods of time playing in Wind Bands, Orchestras, Jazz Ensembles and a Pop Funk Band. He now enjoys conducting Stroud Area Wind Orchestra, along with Jazz Friday.
When David is not conducting, he spends his time teaching Brass and playing principal trumpet in Stroud Symphony Orchestra, solo cornet for A. W. Parker Drybrook Band and trumpet/flugel for the Non-Commitments.
Stroud Area Wind Orchestra was founded by David Smith and Jenny Mainwaring in March 2016. The band's first rehearsal was on the 7th June 2016. We held our first concert after 7 weeks of rehearsals on the 26th July 2016.
Since the band started in 2016, our membership has increased to just under 40 playing members.
